Life updating and One of my sketching Workflows

Is it just me or is WordPress trying too hard to be like Tumblr? If I wanted to be on Tumblr, I’d go on my tumblr… But in any case. Hi again.

I keep meaning to put a post up for Diego Velasquez… but my art books are not with me. So its been so hard to be separated from my personal library of awesomeness.. Vagabond life SUCKS. Maybe I chose this life. Or maybe it was just thrown at me, or maybe its just being young. After moving home with my parents, I moved again back to OC so I could go to work in Long Beach. It’s been interesting. Some of the glamour has faded, but I feel like my life has been repurposed just a little bit. I’ve been good at forcing myself to sleep earlier (than normal) and waking up early in the morning to either do more freelancing work with a certain client, catching up on art related thing, or working on my character designing! I’m excited to say, I’m actually drawing again. Little by little. I whine about not having enough time every day, but it actually works out in the fact that you can do so much more when you’re under pressure — because when you’re under time constraints, there’s a more likely chance to prioritize tasks and get stuff done. This is why procrastination works so well, probably! But its really better to hone that particular skill instead of letting it guilt you into work.

I used to be a night owl, but I’ve turned into an early bird after turning 23. And it works out. I remember working on certain school projects, I’ll wake up suddenly, shoot out of bed and start drawing because my brain solved my design problems whilst sleeping. And then it’ll be like, “OH MY GAWD. YESS. THIS IS HOW ITS GONNA WORK.” People have a romantic idea that this happens only when the mood strikes, but really, its a gradual process, and you have to keep working to get good. Unfortunately, I struggle with doing that sometimes still. But lately, I feel so proud of myself despite a lot of rough pathways in the road.

Sketching late night at Cefiore! I’m thinking about giving my Harpy airship an actual captain.

I dunno if anyone remembers this post on my facebook page (of the alchemy sketch below), and wondering why I’m designing demonic things. Not into devil worship or anything…

I feel bad that I haven’t finished this yet since I’ve been working on this since the beginning of January, but I’m designing the devil for my Bearskin project.

So, I’ve decided to share a bit of my process here:

I use the Alchemy sketching program, and its pretty gnarly. I love using it when I need to see shapes. It’s like looking at clouds and finding the image in the cloud.

I like to start designing the head first because I need to know what personality my character is. I always write an aside note as I’m sketching the top priorities are. For these heads, he had to be “tricksy,” “evil-looking,” “smart/cunning,” and I’m developing this with non-human traits. I was blending a bit of creature design here.

And then I start on the silhouettes. Self-explanatory. I really liked the skinny design, and it would be opposite of my Bearskin character, who’s like a bear-were-animal.

And my drunken animation of him walking… “gracefully.” I used gifpaint! The whole time I thought — “But I have Flash CS6!”

And this is more character sketching. I’ll actually be working on two devils, one for animation and one for video game design. So we’ll see how that turns out.

Sketchbook Project Tour 2013 – The Details

http://www.sketchbookproject.com/projects/sketchbookproject2013

So I finished my book. I wish I had time to photograph it myself, but I sorta went to bed at 3am in the morning. And well… my brother is teaching me to drive again, but he’s only available in the morning before going to work. He dropped off my Sketchbook for me at the post office!
So I’m all set and waiting for confirmation. My theme is Androids despite the categorization that I put, which is “sketchbook.” You can find me by searching for Tannie Duong. πŸ˜€ If there was such a thing as a portable black light, I suggest bringing one!

It starts in Brooklyn New York on March 2-10th, and then tours around to Atlanta, GA , Chicago, Toronto, Canada, Oregon, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. San Francisco’s location still needs TBD, I think, but that will be in July 26th-28th. LA’s show will be held at iam8bit on Aug 2nd – 4th. I didn’t realize the days were so short! To check more on other locations, you should go to the link at the top.

Empress WIP 2

So I think this is the longest I have been without updating and stressful things keep popping up. But, I’m finally working on painting my Empress because 1) I have time now that it is winter break (ohmygah its my last one…), and 2) she was look at me so beguilingly, how can you refuse?

I’d say another 4 or 5 hours of painting.

And, an artsy photo:

I don’t know why there is a check box in WordPress that says, “This post is super-awesome” but I always check it when I remember. πŸ˜€ hehehehe….

Call me an Idealist

So, I am back in San Francisco, and away from SoCal. The 2 months home actually feel far away now. I almost wanted to stay down there because I felt comfortable. But I am comfortable now also. This feels like home also. Probably more so since it feels like this is my main home. There were difficulties I couldn’t voice out. The mundane, however, drove me nuts. It was hard not to be restless but bored. Even at my parents, I felt like a guest. Perhaps it isn’t my real home anymore. I have a feeling I will not being staying here too long either, but wherever my things are, that’s where I am most comfortable. But truly, as you get older, you’ll want to settle down somewhere permanent. I really want my own place…. :3

Before I left, I took pictures of my parent’s neighborhood. I run around it so many times that I know it like the back of my hand. So there were some changes. But they’ve mostly stopped constructing new homes. There are some areas where the workers block it off so that people don’t climb over and mess around… As suburban as it may seem, it still has wild areas. I’d love to explore it when I can (this entails good hiking shoes…). It’s a very good neighborhood. Parents are out with strollers all the time, and pets are walked often. You also see critters like squirrels and rabbits running into the bushes all the time. Although some people are really inconsiderate; they don’t pick up their pet’s droppings… Well, it’s less bad than Treasure Island…

Speaking of insanity, I will be starting the workout for this very soon. As soon as I get all the needed stuff I ordered. Though, I need to make some more trips to the store to buy groceries. It really sucks not to drive. I actually don’t want to order online because I never know what I need, and then I see the prices they have online and it’s terrible. Food is so expensive… But my main diet is salad lately. And there isn’t a thing wrong with it since I feel like I have a ton of energy and I can go on and on. Like the Energizer bunny! I can sleep for 7 hours and not be grouchy that I don’t get 8. Anyway, I’ve been collecting images for awhile now that I think are really great organization ideas for an office/studio room. And I made something out of sketch up. Actually, I imagine the room itself would be smaller, I need to adjust that somehow. So this is some of my references. I’m pretty happy with my vision board. πŸ™‚ Windows are very important to me, as one can see…

Little Mermaid character sketches

This actually took me a long time, but I finally found the right prince to be in my Little Mermaid comic. And unfortunately, I am still procrastinating on the script… πŸ˜› Sorry, me. I really hope to finish writing it by the end of this year, so I can finally start on drawing it! I’m about a third of the way through… I had other stories that started to surface in my head, so I couldn’t help but write them. I guess after LM, I will rewrite Snow White. πŸ˜€ And this one will definitely be different than the original…

The Prince might actually look a little too old, so I might have to play around with that for a bit, or change the ages. I might actually veer off a little from Hans Christian Anderson’s story if I had to, but I still want to remain integral to the original…

Laptop skins and buttons finally here~

Other than a screw up in my order, my stuff have arrived (I actually did buy two 17″ laptop skins, but it came out to be a 13″ which I have nothing to refute or complain against because it showed up on my receipt and I did not check my order. Poop, what a doozy… next time though.). W00t!! Well, waiting for my free business moo cards to come in. Still need to print stuff, I need to make my bookmarks, which I need to buy magnets for… But will definitely get around to doing that by the weekend.

And, I have new glasses, which I am going to make really sure not to lose… The last semester had been sort of terrible for me visually sometimes, well, I couldn’t exactly help my classmates with their critiques because everything was so blurry….. In any case, that’s all for now. Hope to see friends at AM^2.

After months of toiling (sort of)…

I’ve finally finished this!:

Getting ready for AM^2. I’m hoping to find a good place to print the laptop skin on. Unfortunately, due to low funds, I can only print out a limited number of laptop skins… 😦

And I realize that a lot of my gallery sites, including this blog, really needs to be updated…

The Wonders of Hard Work

I am always surprised by time; not tangible time that you count on the clock, but when you’re working on something for a really long while. It does pay off, which when I was young, didn’t really appreciate much. I think we’re all in a hurry.

Anyway, my last final was yesterday, and it was particularly breezy because 1) my afternoon class didn’t have a final and 2) the second class was a writing class. I’m sorry I didn’t try hard enough in it though. I like writing. As anyone can tell, this is why I blog. But I hadn’t actually written a story in a year and a half because I could never finish. But I was able to write 2 stories. One fairly long one, and one very short short. They’re lame and I won’t post them, but I’m really glad I did them because it proves to me that I can still write something.

Anyway, I will be posting up my works from Drawing for Film:

Still waiting on my last final critique from Creature Design, which hopefully, I will get and then probably try to fix. I’d like to go back and fix a lot of things. Which I have, need to update them, however.

I really regret not being more organized, but it’s something that I’m learning to be better at. But I’m not happy with my filing conventions…. I will be working on that this summer. Lot’s to do then, though. Like learn Japanese. I found raws for Bara no Tameni and I really want to read it…. because it’s not published in the US.

Uses for Cardboard and Tin Cans & Orthos of Felines and Equines

Long title!

So this is the second day of spring break, and I have been gathering supplies for emergency disasters. I have Japan to thank for that. It really never occurred to me before to start thinking about possibilities, but people in general just don’t seem prepared for when things like this strike. We’re so busy getting on with our lives that we don’t want to think about it perhaps? So when an earthquake shakes the San Andreas fault and reaches to SF, I won’t die of being stranded or hunger or something, perhaps if not from being crushed by skyscrapers. I lugged a bunch of cans from Safeway yesterday, and for the first time, bought aspirin and pain relievers. I needed to prep for a first aid kit, which I don’t currently have. I’m pretty much completed in my kit today after I carried a 24 count of Arrowhead water bottles, back-breaking though it was, a little walked past and said, “That’s heavy!” Yes, it was. You need at least 3 days of water for each person, 24 bottles should be enough. I’ll post what I have after I get some plastic bins for them because cardboard is weak. Cardboard is still useful though. I put some uses to them, and I did make a nightstand out of it, which by the way, can support a lot of my books. Whoot!

I added a shelf beneath my desk and is supported by 4 layers of cardboard. I don’t put heavy things on there, but it can still hold some lightweight, small objects.

I recycled some tin cans and turned them into supply holders and just taped them to the legs of my desk.

Well, all my stuff have been getting in the way. I had to organize it in some way, so I didn’t want to spend $100 or so just to do that at the Container Store or something overpriced at Utrecht. There is no Target or Walmart nearby. I’d have to own a car. But our house was in bad need of spring cleaning… I might as well start in my room. Albiet, I sacrificed some schoolwork time to do that… That week wasn’t particularly good for me, but no way around it if the mess was getting in the way of work.

And because the table is slanted, it’s really hard to keep things from not slipping. But it’s hard to not have supplies on hand. Luckily, I just thought of taping the thing to my desk, and it works. The tape on the ink bottle not only helps from not slipping but in the case that my arm toches the bottle, it won’t knock over. Because that would suck.

I got the idea of prettying up a plain clipboard from some spring cleaning and organization blogs. The paper is actually wrapping paper I bought at Papyrus. If Samantha happens to see this, yes, it’s the same as the gift-wrapping paper I used for your xmas gift.

My friend, Nguyen’s bday was on the 17th last, and I didn’t really have time to mail this gift box until yesterday… Oops… well, it was hella busy because of all my classes… :\ Β But I LOVE Japanese papers…. They’re pretty pricey though. I got this tiny roll for $3. 😐 Oh well, it’s pretty. I took an old ring box and taped the paper around. See what you can do to reuse??? Well, least to say, Donald’s white elephant has proved itself useful in some ways… hahaha… I still dunno what I can buy at gamestop for $5. Well, maybe one of the used games that sell for $10.

Shhhh… Well, I wonder if the gift got to her? In any case, I don’t think my actual friends from OC read this (it does make me feel kinda sad… t_t)

And my creature design stuffs… Week 8 is gonna be unicorn, so stayed tuned?! Who knows if I’ll get around to posting by then though.
