Coloring the Lantern Festival

Hello again! Two posts in one month, but don’t expect much more! 😛 I do aspire to be like Kentarou Miura, but I think I am much worse at updating.

In any case, I made another drawing tutorial. Last year was the line art and this year I colored. I actually did this in the spring, but I forgot to video edit, so I just waited until August again since it’s about that time! At least I’m good about putting one up once a year? So after being totally won over by Shinhan, because the owners are SOOO nice to me every time I come by their booth at SDCC — and great products of course! that’s why I keep coming back too. I brought my boyfriend, Peter, to meet them and they were just gushing about me to him. It was so lovely. 🙂 I bought myself a good set of markers. I tried my best to create a limited palette, plus, I still had a ton of Copics, so it’d be a waste, I used them together to create this final piece:

I think I really like how all this came out. I’ll be honest, I really suck at using markers. I can’t control them the way other artists seem to. It’s like much more magical when they do it, but I guess practice makes perfect.

Yes, Shinhan and Copic are practically the same type, just different brands. You can intermix them together, but Shinhan is cheaper, I suppose their production costs in S.Korea is significantly less than Japan. Quality-wise, practically the same. I specifically chose lanterns as a main subject to showcase how to create gradient effects using a “0-colorless blender.” Definitely need to frequently refill every so-often. They sell 20mL refill inks that you can just fill up through the nib. But nibs should be replaced if it starts to wear out, which I am now finding after making this video.

I tried to keep the video length and size reasonable, so I decided to speed it up by 400%. Anymore of course, seemed way too fast. I wanted it to be less than 30 minutes… but (-_-) sigh, it came out to be 46 minutes.

So normally,  I keep a palette next to me when working with creating blending. A white one is the most preferable, because you’ll be able to see the colors the best, but glass works too because you can just put a piece of white paper underneath.

The gradation technique works best on a clean nib, 2 colors, and 1 colorless blender. I actually but a refill 20mL for the 0 colorless blender by Shinhan also because the first time I tried out the technique, I was like this really awesome! But you need lot’s of ink to make it gradate nicely. I also use this technique to mix all new colors that I otherwise don’t have with the markers individually. That grey purple in the sky is the result of mixing Copic black, a tiny bit of BV08, PB69 Prussian Blue Touch Twin, and WG7 Touch.

That pink on her cheeks came from RP291 Primary Magenta and F121 Fluorescent Coral Red Touch markers. And so on. If you’re good on color theory, go wild with mixing.

Near the end of the video, I am actually using the the refill color and dropping in the colorless blender ink, the same way you’d drop alcohol onto watercolor to make the colors move around and create circular splotches.

ShinHan Art really is incredibly helpful. I actually got myself a new set of liner pens, that I can’t wait to test out in my own artwork. So you’ll maybe see a review on those a bit later. Don’t get me wrong Copic quality is nice, and they’ve been around for awhile, but I like that ShinHan has the same quality at a much more affordable option. But, I do want to say that I think the Copic ink liners quality goes down after some years. Because I still am using some, but they started to smear with the Copic, and I wish I knew why because I use good quality Bristol or marker paper to draw on, and it still smears with marker. That’s not good! Just keep that in mind that some inks don’t have good shelf life. 😐

Anyways, this is a tribute to my old childhood. The lantern festival/Harvest Moon celebration or as Vietnamese call it Tet Chung Thu, is different than the Chinese counterpart that is for lovers. Ours is a celebration for children, and most families take their kids out in the night and light up these lanterns. I just remember seeing the really cool cellophane looking ones in the shape of butterflies, bunnies, and fish, but whenever the adults in my family got us lanterns, it wasn’t nearly as cute as the animals. They were just plain accordion lanterns, and I guess it just makes me question whether they were being frugal or we were just that damn poor. The little girl in the drawing is indeed wearing an ao dai, but I have found that there’s a lot of ao dai redesigned for older women, but there aren’t any cute contemporary ones for the kids. And I’m into gothic lolita, so if China, Korea, and Japan can do it! Vietnamese can too.

The setting itself is in Hoi An, it’s the lantern festival’s main place to be if you’re actually in Vietnam. That fish is actually on a bridge in the river in Hoi An. It’s near Da Nang city, which is less urban than the 2 other major cities of Vietnam.

In any case, I hope you guys enjoy my video, any feedback would be appreciated. I’m rather new to the world of video editing, but I’m finding it quite fun when things go right… hahaha

The Harvest Moon with Line Art video

It’s that time of the year. Where the moon is going to be extra big. As a Vietnamese kid, I often remember this time as being lit up with candles and being given these lanterns, that we never go out to light up anyway… except once! when I barely remembered. Back then we had cooler looking lanterns shaped in different sizes. And then adults didn’t feel like getting us those anymore, they just got us the simple accordion ones. Oh well, I didn’t need them anyway! I grew up fine without them….! hahahaha

Normally, the holiday itself is different for Vietnamese in that its a little bit more focused on children. For Chinese, its a little bit more romantic for couples.

But honestly, one of my favorite things about the holiday is eating lotus moon cakes… and they only come out during this time of year…. D: Some people might think they are very dense cakes, but they’re best served with some neutral tasting teas. The innards come in a variety of flavors, but I’m much more partial to the sweet bean paste flavors like lotus bean, mung bean, and red beans.

During July, I visited the booth ShinHan Art Supplies was stationed at during Comic Con, and I came back with two new pens. I all ready had an 0.3 pen, but now I own an 0.1 and a Brush pen in addition.

My collection keeps on growing. The Touch Liners do come in a variety of other sizes ranging from: 0.05, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.8mm and in a pack set of 5 or 7 liner nibs.

It’s quick to dry, works like Copic liners, water resistant, smear proof, and archival ink as well as other nifty things. The pen, like other products, was made in Japan, but created in Korea. The ink also retains well against markers like the Touch and Copic inks.

Near the end of the drawing, I outlined the things I wanted to pop out the most with the brush pen. This is one of the nicer liner tip brush pens I have used. It’s flexible, but not overly so, and creates a “cleaner” brush affect than say my old Sakura liners. They’re really comparable to the Copics just because I always get an 0.3 since its the ideal size for any quick line drawing. I think the one thing I’d like to see next is also having a refillable version of the Touch Liners too just because I’m all for sustainable products these days.

Honestly, I’m not even endorsed by them to do any of these reviews; I just like the company owners, who are really personable and friendly, and the products they make are really awesome and affordable compared to a lot of the leading products out there.

Shinhan Premium Watercolors test

Hello!

Finally got around to testing out the tubes of Shinhan premium water color.

A little bit about Shinhan water colors:

They’re a Korean based company, and they’re specialty is color luminosity, and quality paint products. They also have a line of markers called Touch markers, which is pretty much similar to Copic — I will be doing a review of this later also.

Here’s a test page. So basically, I was testing to see the luminosity and opacity/transparency. The paper I used is Arches Natural White, Cold Press, 140lb. Overall, I’ve found them to be quite transparent able to retain good luminosity on the white of the paper. The only other test is time, which is lightfastness, but that’s really something I’m going to put off doing. But as I visited their booth at Comic Con, I met Mrs. Han, who showed me a demo of the markers, a picture from a couple of years ago – maybe 5 years? She’ll have to correct me on that… I can’t remember! 😛 — well, least to say, the colors in the markers remained the same. I think its safe to assume their watercolors, being professional quality is exactly the same.

So the top ones are the Shinhan paints. I really can’t do a color comparison it feels like, because sometimes there are so many pigment names and color variations, each company names them differently; there’s no one unified name. And sometimes one red can be totally different from another red. It really comes down to what pigments each company uses. But I picked colors to compare that best matched as much as possible. On the left side, I tested what they looked like charged together, and then when you add alcohol to it.

I think these are pretty bright paints. I can definitely see that my Reeves Pthalo Blue is the most opaque, because it shows up on top of the black line. But the rest of the other paints are rather transparent over the black line (which is India Ink). And then the Van Gogh Permanent Blue Violet is the next most opaque. This one matched with the Shinhan Permanent Violet, is a lot more blue-ish in hue. Although all the Shinhan paints were really hard to scrub out of the paper after applying a lot of water, it could just be that most of the time, cool pigments tend to stick much more. So these pigments are quite permanent, as in the paints didn’t wash off so easily; the blue was the least difficult to lift off. And the not sure because of the brand, Reeves, but the Pthalo Blue lifted off really easily. So, but this brand is normally really easy to lift off… I like it for when I’m starting out a painting and can apply colors on top gradually. (As you are painting in watercolor, the opposite method of painting versus oil applies — you paint from lights to darks. But with oil colors, you paint from darks to lights.) I know the manganese Blue by Windsor isn’t as dark as Peacock Blue, but they were similar in hue so I just put it next.

I did this chart back in 2009 and probably need to update it again, as I have much more paint colors now and want to swap out for my better quality stuff. But normally, this is similar to what I did up there. I just wasn’t as thorough — I didn’t test how each of the other paints would react when mixed together — but that is for another free weekend.

I also tested them alongside colors that I all ready own. So the best watercolor brands I had before this, currently is Windsor and Van Gogh. I started off with Reeves and Grumbacher – these were hand-me-downs from my sister’s bestie, so she was a designer, but she didn’t need them anymore. So lucky me, I got to inherit them along with some other nifty art supplies. But they didn’t really give me particularly rich colors, I started off with using them in the class room. And have since added more to my collection, so I’m happy I got these Shinhan pwc’s to add to it also. 🙂

I made the mistake of adding too much alcohol and that made me unable to lift off anymore of the watercolors… so I had to add white back in with white paint. I did extra touch ups with the white paint after the video as well.

I think overall, I’m very impressed with the colors, really nice and really saturated. I hope they’re products get a little more attention. If you’re trying to find a retailer for the paints, DickBlick’s online store and Jerry’s Artarama online store also sells it. San Diego Comic Con International 2014

San Diego Comic Con has been a really wonderful and amazingly awesome experience. As a first-time goer, there was tons to do, with little time for rest. And I’ve been to my fair share of conventions. I’ve been going to Anime Expo since 2006 on and off up til the present, as well as to E3 this year and last year (which was amazing when I first went but has since dulled this second year), and then to some smaller conventions such as ALA, AM^2, and APE, and big ones like CTNX, GDC, WonderCon. Least to say, this is really my most favorite convention ever. All the other conventions seemed to lack something, but honestly, SDCC seems to have a lot of things to make up for anything that it does not have. There’s just so much content, you’ll never have nothing to do. Anime Expo this year was extremely crowded, and for the first time, reached max capacity. That was a surprise. A very bad surprise. As there was very little content, even if you find that a panel has been completely reached capacity, you’re left with nothing to do. I got frustrated and bored, or maybe it was because I’ve been going to it for so long that there’s nothing interesting about it anymore? Dilemma. My only reason for going is social obligations to friends. However, I’m not going to get completely into this, as Comic Con has some of the most fanatical fans ever (overnight camping just for a panel?!) but even if there was a panel that was completely full, there’s still plenty to do inside the convention and outside of it.

For me, there was a lot of firsts. Initially it was very scary for me, as I am prone to getting lost and feeling extreme anxiety when I can’t visualize where I am. But I got over that learning curve pretty fast, like trying navigate around the city to find good parking. I got super excited on Saturday when I found great parking spots at a reasonable price — if thursday and friday weren’t so awesome, I would have been pretty pissed at having to pay $30 for parking for only 10 hours per day. That’s almost more bad than LA during Anime Expo…my wallet was quite sad, but you cannot imagine my inner triumph on Saturday and Sunday. Ha-ha! And also how tired I was at having to wake up early just to snag good parking. Least to say, I can check this convention off my bucket list. But I will hopefully be returning next year and with another buddy. I do things by myself quite often, and I don’t mind meandering alone down the exhibit hall and exploring by myself as this is something that I a relish, but sometimes, its just nice to share in that experience with someone else who is a comrade in your adventures — especially, with something like Comic Con. There’s a point where you’re just standing in line and you’re taking pictures by yourself, but then you see someone behind have a fun group photo, and you wish deep inside, “Darn, I wish my friend was here with me.”

But in any case, I got a lot of productive things done, so going by myself was really more for expanding positive business connections.

I sacrificed watching the Once Upon a Time panel to get my portfolio reviewed by Nickelodeon, and hopefully, I’ll get around to applying now that I’m feeling much more confident about my portfolio. I’d been working extremely hard the following year to make a lot of new content. Such as my Bearskin project, which has been very positive as dark as it is — I recently got it published with Oxford University Press for their Kaboodle educational textbook — and getting around to designing Zetes von Boreas, the Harpy ship captain. Sometimes, I feel like I haven’t made much progress at all, but I had the opportunity to reflect a lot as I organize my portfolio pieces, that I’ve actually done a lot. However, this certainly won’t stop me from creating because there is just SO many ideas that I’ve yet to do. It is rather unfortunate that I never got around to pitching for Nickelodeon as I originally intended. There was a lot of factors on the days before the convention, and time simply ran out, but I am always working on my next story, so this isn’t too much of a problem. Hopefully, I’ll be much more prepared for the next opportunity that pops up.

I feel like I’m constantly busy, and after not being busy for a good while, its a very good change. I wish I could show off accompanying videos for my recent freelance stuff with Free Range Studios, but I think they’re not yet released, so I don’t really want to toot any horns while of my past projects may be still under radar.

But anyway! I’m also super excited that I got to meet some of the members of Girls Drawin’ Girls finally!

I did not once feel bored helping out at the booth and in fact, loved talking with my booth buddies. They’re awesome! I don’t know why its so much easier to help someone else sell, but I have trouble selling for myself at these things. ahahah… >_>

We had a very successful show at the Chuck Jone’s Gallery on Thursday night last week during Comic Con. Linda Jones, who the daughter of Chuck Jones was there doing signings. Pretty rad.

I got an awesome autograph from Dave McKean! He drew in my sketchbook. I wish he signed my name too, but I felt like these news reporters just butted in and he ended up having to rush the sketch in the end. :\

It was cool anyway. I’m really horrible though, as I knew I was supposed to really like him, but I could not for the life of me remember why. And then when I got home, it hit me that he did the covers for Sandman, which I looooove. I wish I cosplayed as Death that day… hahaha ..I also wish I had more to say to him when I saw him too.

The perks of going to SDCC is the fact that all the biggest artists in the industry usually come to these events, so I’m really lucky I got to see Stephan Martiniere and purchase a print. I actually had barely any time to visit all the artists as the exhibit hall was HUGE, and there were so many events happening all at once. It was difficult to walk through at times as well due to the humongous crowds. I need to find some space on my inspiration board to pin it up. I feel like when I pin up something I aspire to, it usually helps me visualize.

It was also great seeing all the creator content too, I like to see how the new age artist revolution is doing with all these independent projects in artist alley and small press booths. Going once really is not enough to fully immerse yourself, I feel like maybe a 2nd time will actually complete the experience. I feel like I need to go to all the creator content panels as I only got to see 2 or 3, one of which was how to get into the Gaming Industry. I really love hearing stories on how it all worked out for the people working in their creative fields.

I’m a huge TMNT fan.

As a newbie, it was all very overwhelming each day. My feet hurt, and my right knee as well after preview night and thursday — really wasn’t used to all the walking, since I’ve been a lot less active lately. In the end, I took the bus pretty much whenever I could. But sometimes, the streets were so crowded, it was hard to do.

But no pain no gain?

The night still had fun things to do, but as the days wore on, I felt much less inclined to stay out late, and much more eager to go home as early as possible to sleep and wake up early for the next day. I think next year, I will attempt to obtain a hotel room at a reasonably closer distance so I don’t have to wake up too early… 😛

I also got to connect with the president of ShinHan Art, and his wife, a really nice Korean woman, which I am pretty excited to test out as soon as I am not too busy with my freelancing. I will be writing a full review on the markers that I bought and comparing it with Copic markers — they’re basically very similar marker products so we shall see~! I’m also going to be testing out the watercolors shown here too, so yeahhh I’m pretty excited. 🙂
